About

Hi, I’m Jason Walsh, founder of Build Kitchissippi.

For me a project is most satisfying when the job is done properly, in a competent manner, and with client expectations exceeded. In short, craftsmanship, efficiency, and relationships, aka the founding principals of Build Kitchissippi.

Growing up I had the advantage of a handy father with a need for a helper on occasion. While I did not appreciate it fully at the time, that informal training taught me a lot about maintaining and improving a home, the proper use of a wide variety of tools, and most importantly the satisfaction of a job well done.

After graduating from Algonquin College with a diploma in Business Administration: Marketing I was fortunate to join Opinion Search, a growing Ottawa based market research company with a reputation for quality research and a commitment to client satisfaction. The hours were long, and the environment demanding, however I was proud to make Opinion Search my home for the next ten years. Working with a great team of people I had the opportunity to hone my precision, communication, and project management skills and form work habits that are essential to success.

Towards the end of my market research career I longed to produce something tangible in a world of numbers on computer screens. Sometime around 2011 I stumbled upon a gentlemen who built his own earth sheltered home and provided an incredibly detailed timeline of the build, including photos and informational snippets. That build log instantly captivated me and is one of the main reasons I am running a residential renovation business today.

The following years were spent researching alternative building methods such as earth sheltering, straw bale construction, geodesic domes, and cordwood construction. Further research lead me to more mainstream methods of building such as insulated concrete forms, and structural insulated panels. Building standards such as the passive house standard were soon on my radar.

While the above building methods might not suit everyone, they utilize building science principals such as superinsulation, passive solar, thermal mass, thermal bridging, and airtightness of the building envelope to achieve increased energy efficiency, comfort, and livability. In short, the types of homes I hope we are all living in not too long from now.

At the end of 2013 I resigned from my position at Opinion Search and began my formal career in the trades. A myriad of demo days, linear feet of framing, boards of drywall, square feet of tile, strokes of a brush, as well as other tasks have allowed me to acquire the skill set needed to execute interior renovations from start to finish, ensuring the aesthetics of your renovation are backed by building science.
